Increasing land access through solar array sites across CO.

The Colorado Agrivoltaic Learning Center’s Solar Array Lands Supporting Agribusiness (SALSA) program pairs agriculturalists with land within solar array sites across Colorado. These sites, often in perennial grass cover or former ag use, offer ample dual-use opportunities. It's important that farmer respect the nature of a solar site and solar safety guidelines as outlined by the solar company that manages the site. This is an opportunity for a farmer to become an agrivoltaic pioneer in their community and showcase the possibilities within solar arrays. This is not the only property in the program portfolio. General Information

Quality of Land

The 5 acres within the array are vegetated with native grass and soil health practices kept in mind through solar development. There is a small perennial strip ~20' x 50' that currently acts as a visual screen however the perennials were poorly established and the solar operators and landowner are open to this strip being converted to crops. The irrigation tap is located closely to the perennial strip with opportunity to extend irrigation into the solar array if farmer would like to take advantage of cultivating in the microclimate of solar panels. Tap is municipal water, expected to be reimbursed to the landowner.

The site has a city metered irrigation tap at the corner of the property. This water is welcome for farmer to use but need to be reimbursed to the landowner who lives adjacent.

Additional Production Details

This is an irrigable site that has been maintained in grass cover for years. It features a ~1.2 mW single axis tracking solar array owned by local Fort Collins solar developer. Approximate farmable area is 5 acres. Small livestock grazing, or apiary operations are welcome and feasible on this site.

Tenure Arrangement Details

Use of this site is set up as free through the Solar Array Lands Supporting Agribusiness program, facilitated by the Colorado Agrivoltaic Learning Center. The program expects participants to have minimal 2 years experience in the agricultural practice they seek to implement, but solar specific experience not required. The SALSA program is a business incubator program seeking to uplift, mentor and connect agribusinesses with underutilized land within solar arrays. However, depending on type of farmer/grazing there could be compensation from solar company for vegetation maintenance.

Conservation Easement Details

This site offers a negligible lease in exchange for maintaining the perennial strip. Compensation for vegetative services are open to discussion. Leases involve the landowner, solar asset manager, and farmer. Colorado Agrivoltaic Learning Center nonprofit, overseeing the solar land access program provides business coaching, startup funding (case basis), and solar safety support.
